AGING WELL ACROSS CULTURES

INSIGHTS FROM OLDER ADULTS

EXPLORING AGING WELL AMONG OLDER ADULTS

Older adults’ perspectives of successful aging may differ based on cultural values, resilience, spirituality, and close familial ties. This report examines those perspectives and identifies ways to promote aging well across different demographics among community-dwelling older adults.

Participants’ level of successful aging was measured using 12 questions that assess factors related to healthy lifestyle, engagement in social and productive activities, and coping and resilience.

AMONG THE FINDINGS:

  • Across groups, participants reported feeling generally positive about their well-being with relatively high perceptions of aging well.

  • Successful aging tended to be greater among Black/African American respondents and lower among South Asian Americans.

  • Black/African American respondents reported greater healthy lifestyles than all other groups, and South Asian American respondents were statistically lower than all groups except White/Non-Hispanic respondents.
